Anyone Is Invited To the "Blast"

It has come to the attention of the "Committee" that some people are under the impression that only RB alumnae are invited.  Please be advised anyone may attend for any reason. We're not picky. We just want everyone from their respected era to have fun and rekindle old friendships. To see the look on someone's face when they see friends from the "old days" that they haven't seen in thirty or more years, is a true joy to behold. This get together is in the true sprit of the old grove parties many of us organized in the past only now, it's legal. Also, it's for a worthy cause so, it's a win-win for all of us. Please sign up today.

Hope to see all of you at the "Blast".

Please take this opportunity to spread the word to friends and relations from the past or present. Invite your neighbors also and tell them to tell everyone they know. We need everyone’s help and support to "Spread the Word" that there’s a grove party at Kiwanis Park on August 18, 2007 at 2:00 PM.

Long time Riverside Resident and Friend Of Many On This Forum Passed Away August 3, 2007

For those of us who knew Joe, a kinder gentler man you will never find.  Joe attended St. Mary's grade school in Riverside. Joe resided at his childhood home on Audubon Rd. in Riverside. He taught special education at the Brian Piccolo Elementary School in Chicago which speaks volumes about his kind, patient and gentle nature.

This is such a tragedy. The old adage "the good they die young" sure fits. It was my privilege and honor to have known this kind and gentle man most of my life.  Joe had a wit that was a pure delight to behold. I will never forget my fellow center on the St. Mary's football team and all the fun and hyjinx through the years with Joe and company. Oh the stories I could tell.

We extend our deepest condolences to the immediate family, Helen his mother, Cele his aunt, Mary & Holly his sisters, Tom & Jim his brothers.

Joe, all of us will miss you terribly and the memory of your kind and gentle spirit will live in us the rest of our lives.  For those who didn't know Joe, this was truly "Someone You Should Have Known".  We love you Joe.Below are some quotes from his friends and a link to Ivins Funeral Home. The wake is Tuesday and the Funeral at St. Mary's is on Wednesday

"Did a nicer guy ever live?" John Concannon

"for all of you who knew him, I'm sure you'll agree that Duffy was one of the greatest human beings--my heart hurts." Jim Kazda

"I truly treasured Joe as one stellar and irreplaceable friend." Joe Pusateri

"A sweeter kinder man I never knew... It was privileged to have known him for most of our 58 years... The mischief and the good times as kids seem like only yesterday...  My fellow center,,, you will be missed and your memory will never fade from my heart and mind... We all love you Joe..." Tom Uhlich

"I am so sorry to hear about Joe! He was a great guy. Your words  described him well." Meredith Hay Kelly

"Joe Duffy was a kind and gentle soul, an excellent writer, and a compassionate human.  He kept alive in himself a healthy dose of impish mischief. He was a guy who got IT.   I'm not sure if Joe's death is your group's first loss of a guy so close to you. But I have been through a couple and it is extremely painful losing a witness to something as important as your childhood. I can tell you though as time passes, it doesn't seem to hurt as much, but I can also tell you that you will never miss him any less; and that's a testament to Joe Duffy and in turn to all of you." Bob Tomkins

"What a piece of glory has left this earth.  To those on this list who knew him, grew with him and loved him, I offer my deepest condolences. His younger sister Mary and I were pals in grade school and high school.  I came to know him because of that and also because my brother Jim's close circle incuded Joe.  We shared a passion for literature and poetry (Joe always steering me to the delicate and and sublime in strengh and challenge).  He was keenly observant, patient;his listening skills were as finely tuned as I have known.  We read alot, laughed alot, and wrote alot of letters ( the real deal) to each other over many years.  I will grieve him well.  Too soon for him to leave."

Operation Stars And Stripes Needs Your Help

Below is a copy of an email Meredith sent out recently to all her family and friends.

Meredith (Hay) Kelly '68 is in dire need of funds to keep her "Operation Stars and Stripes" going. She is digging into her own pocket again and is about out of funds.  Please visit her site and send help quickly.  She works tirelessly at this endeavor without compensation and needs our support.

Dear Family & Friends,

As you all know I have been running a program backed by General Motors. Local 2114, Bolingbrook, Ill. and Region 4 UAW Veterans called "Operation Stars & Stripes" since March 2003. Many public & private groups have jumped on board with us to get much needed support to our Troops in harms way. To date we are down to our last $350.00 for postage money to get our care packages out. I am asking you to send our web site out to all your friends & family members. www.operationstars.com   We are asking for your help to keep this program going. New names of  our Troops are coming in on a weekly, sometimes daily basis that could use our support. We are doing great on the items that we send but it is getting the packages out that has become a major issue in the last month or two. Whether you agree with the war or not is not what our program is about. It is supporting our troops while they are doing a job that our Government has asked them to do.
Any cash or check donations should be sent to:

"Operation Stars & Stripes"
C/O Charter One Bank
 4231 Joliet Ave
Lyons, Ill. 605343

If every one gives a little it adds up quickly and we can continue supporting our Troops.
In Friendship & Support
Meredith

Orbitz and Mary (Misare) Iden '72 Have Done It Again

Orbitz- Keeping You A Step Ahead! 234x60

Mary (Misare) Iden (left) from the class of '72 and Orbitz have teamed up again this year with a generous donation to the RBHS "Blast" 2007 for the benefit of Operation Stars and Stripes.  Last years raffle winner for the two round trip tickets anywhere in the USA was Claudia Adams, '82 (center). The proceeds from the raffle were beyond our wildest dreams generating much needed cash flow for OSS and Meredith Hay Kelly's (right) tireless effort supporting our troops overseas.

It must be noted that Mary (Misare) Iden knows first hand the pain and suffering of separation incurred by our troops overseas, especially in a hostile environment, and the pain and suffering of the families at home who have to endure the hardship of loved ones in harms way. Mary's son Specialist Steve Iden was a MP (Military Police) inIraq.  He is back safe and sound in Ft. Benning GA awaiting his next duty assignment in a much friendlier place, Japan.  Welcome Home Steve.  Thank You Mary from the bottom of our hearts.  All of us appreciate your help and support.

All members of this committee, and others, have donated their time, effort and money to this worthy cause. All excess proceeds are donated to Operation Stars and Stripes (OSS) and Riverside Brookfield High School Arts Department.

Beer, pop, water and entertainment is included with the price of admission. Food is available for purchase.

All statements in this newsletter are believed to be true and correct.
